Woman doing makeup

Say sayonara short-term beauty solutions. In 2024, the cosmetic market is expected to shift toward a holistic approach—one that will re-signify the very notion of beauty. Invasive and expensive treatments are taking a backseat. Embracing our aging skin is where it’s at. Rather than fight the lines, we’re celebrating them. In response, the beauty industry is listening. They’re dropping harsh anti-aging treatments in favor of utilizing the body’s natural regenerative systems.

Skin Longevity

Longevity is the name of the game in 2024. Thanks to longevity research, many of us are starting to re-think the span of our lives. In fact, the global longevity market is projected to reach $183 billion by 2028! With the right daily habits, we can live longer, feel better, and look younger. Rather than an immediate fix, we want long-term resources. This year, we’ll be buying products that utilize revolutionary science, regenerative medicine, and biotechnology. Inspiring and innovative ingredients are at our fingertips.

Minimal Makeup with a Splash of Color

We’ll continue to favor minimal makeup in 2024, but vibrant splashes aren’t disappearing. A single pop of color is all you need to make a statement (a dash of color on the eyes or lips). Experts predict we’ll be topping off our barely-there foundation with vibrant eyeliner or a swipe of lipstick.

Global peppers, buckwheat, and cottage cheese are among the food trends expected to stock the shelves in 2024. Oh, and plenty of plants.

Putting the Plant Back in Plant-Based

We’re putting the veggie back in veggie burgers. In turn, ingredient lists are shrinking (hooray!). In place of complex meat alternatives, walnuts, tempeh, and legumes are here to stay. This includes fancy faux fish, like trumpet mushrooms for scallops. Even plant-based milk alternatives are simplifying. As a whole, an interest in veganism will continue to prosper.

Spicy Sauces and Chili Oils

The trend for global peppers is only getting hotter. You’ll spot more fresh, whole, ground, and pickled peppers at the store. Plus, a new wave of sauces and chili oils are popping up in condiment aisles. Even tajín is expanding to spice up your grocery store sushi, desserts, and more.

Protein

It’s official: gym rats are no longer the only ones prioritizing their protein intake. And with it comes an eating pattern that promotes more not less—more energy, more strength, and more body confidence. On that note, dairy is also re-earning its seat at the table. From butter boards to cottage cheese bowls, we foresee more sustainably-sourced, high-fat dairy options fighting for fridge space.

All About Buckwheat

You probably know it in the form of soba noodles. But buckwheat is a versatile seed with fabulous nutrition stats. Containing protein, carbs and fiber, this gluten-free ingredient will penetrate your favorite food products (like crackers and granola) in 2024.

Treat Yourself

We can thank TikTok for “Little Treat Culture”—a trend we’re fully on board for. With that green light, consider 2024 the year you indulge in little luxuries. Think: an impulse macaron, an enticing adaptogenic beverage, or a weekday morning croissant. Brands are getting in on the trend, too. We’ll see individual serving packages that add joy without breaking the bank.

Well-Rounded Nourishment

Ultimately, we’re shifting away from specific and rigorous diets (like keto) in 2024. Instead, we’ll move toward more well-rounded ones, like eating for blood sugar balance and the Mediterranean diet. After decades of restricting, limiting, and narrowing our food intake, we’re focusing on fueling ourselves for stronger bodies—not depriving ourselves for the sake of smaller ones.

Woman journaling in bed - 2024 wellness trends predictions

If there’s one industry that’s making moves in 2024, it’s women’s health. From next-gen postpartum care to biohacking for females, we’re in for a (much-deserved) treat.

Products for Periods Through Postpartum

Across social media, we’ve seen hormone health take center stage. Think: fertility supps, seed cycling energy bites, and ovulation wearables. As such, food innovators are taking note. You can now shop for innovative prenatal snacks and PCOS-focused protein bars. Energizing menopause bars are available, too. In 2024, expect to see a growing emphasis on postpartum care, including better support in the transition to parenthood.

Biohacking

Biohacking is no longer just for bros. Women are asserting their authority in all things health research and optimization. Think: low-lift, everyday habits that enhance an existing well-being routine. Cold plunging, saunas, and building strength are blurring gender norms. Here’s a mini course on biohacking (specifically for women), if you’re curious to tap in.

Creatine Supplements

Similarly, creatine supplements are no longer marketed toward men. Come 2024, more and more women will be taking creatine to boost their athletic performance, support brain health, and promote youthful skin.

Limiting Noise-Induced Hearing Loss

Yes, ear health is a top priority in 2024. And good news! A slew of sleek wearables, medical innovations, and urban design changes are here to help us out. Expect to see more emphasis on ear health and hearing loss prevention, across the board.

Smart Gear

Inevitably, wearable devices are only getting smarter. In fact, they’re transforming the traditional patient-physician relationship. Smart gear will include everything from tampons to socks, and you’ll be able to share this data directly with their doctor—if you choose. A great example of this? Attune App. With a 60-second face scan (on your phone), it provides daily biomarkers. In 2024, minimizing chronic, avoidable health conditions is getting easier.

Woman stretching

We’ve long known that exercise is fundamental. It strengthens our hearts, builds muscle, and improves our mental health. But it’s also a nourishing way to forge relationships. In 2024, who you move with will be more important than how you move. You read that right. Workout culture is getting an upgrade.

Fitness Clubs > Social Clubs

In 2024 and beyond, we’ll see an upsurge in community-based fitness groups. Organizations will come together to encourage people to reap the benefits of movement, together. Whether your passion is hiking or pickleball, more fitness clubs (with social events) are emerging. In other words, gym owners will start prioritizing workout studios with a deep focus on community and connection.

Functional Fitness

Living to 100 is no longer a lofty goal. We just need to make sure our bodies can keep up. Enter: functional strength and mobility. As such, more people are lifting heavier weights, improving their range of motion, and fostering joint health. We’re embracing more walking, too. Rest is still key, but a sedentary lifestyle isn’t a vibe in 2024.

AI Coaches

In 2024, AI coaches are poised to lead an alternative era of fitness training. These AI-driven coaches will leverage real-time data analysis and personalized recommendations—a level of guidance that’s never been available before. These coaches will be able to identify trends, pinpoint weaknesses, and make continuous adjustments to your fitness levels. Whoa.

Post-Workout Recovery

In 2024, expect a significant expansion in the focus on post-workout recovery. This is great news, as recovery plays a crucial role in achieving optimal fitness results, reducing the risk of injury, and enhancing overall well-being. Look out for new ways to maximize your post-workout sweat, like bathing, ice baths, saunas, and thermotherapy.

Thankfully, the past several years have seen an uptick in interest across all areas of wellness—our mental health, included. In 2024, expect to see the trend continue, with more resources and opportunities for people to feel well.

Group Therapy

Non-virtual spaces where women can gather and reflect? You betcha. Women’s healing circles are gaining popularity. In 2024—and beyond—this coveted method of wellness will offer participants a safe group space to connect, share, and empower each other. In many ways, the concept of women-only spaces is dear to second-wave feminism. But it’s now coming back in the form of group therapy. Many are available across the globe, including specific retreats for women to discuss certain topics while surrounded by nature.

Wellness Retreats

Speaking of retreats, Ideal magazine foresees 2024 as the year of wellness vacations. For those consumed by the frenzy of modern life (ahem, most of us), we’ll be looking for ways to hit the brakes this year. At the tippy top of the list? Sleep retreats. Given that sleep disorders impact 50-70 million Americans, this is no surprise. There will be an increasing interest toward more natural settings for these sleep retreats, like forests or remote seaside villages. And they’ll offer a series of services— ranging from cognitive treatments to relaxation techniques.

Social Media Detoxing

We live in an age of round-the-clock connectivity. But with mental well-being at the forefront, let’s vow to leave constant notifications in 2023. Come 2024, allow the rise of mindful tech to surface. Look out for coffee shops, wellness spaces, and even work places that offer tech-free zones. In that vein, we foresee more apps that encourage digital breaks. We’ve already started advocating for scheduled periods of device disconnection. This is your gentle nudge to join the party! Digital overload is officially a thing of the past.

The Biggest Misconceptions About Clean Beauty, According to an Industry Insider

It wasn’t all that long ago that the term “clean beauty” was new concept. But thanks to the goop-ification of the beauty world and the industry’s rabid embrace of buzzwords, it’s now nearly impossible to escape. Words like “clean,” “natural,” and “organic”—none of which are properly regulated by the FDA—get thrown around so often they’ve lost meaning. You could easily find yourself on the verge of detoxing your entire skincare collection before pausing to ask yourself, “What does ‘clean beauty’ even mean?” LILFOX’s, Alexis Rose, has some thoughts.

“Clean beauty requires a holistic approach to both the end user and the planet—today as well as over the long term,” says Rose, founder of the Miami-based beauty brand LILFOX. “It’s about ingredients that are biodegradable, ocean-friendly, and without petrochemicals.”

Uncovering the Clean Beauty Trend with an Industry Insider

And though the luxury skincare line, known for evocative product names like Flower Goo, Marshmallow Poof, and Blue Legume, would certainly fall in the “clean” category (or “cleanical”), LILFOX’s site isn’t laden with the word. That’s intentional.

“We don’t focus too much on the term clean beauty in part because our customers know it means different things to different brands,” Rose explains. “We have been formulating with organic ingredients (all biodegradable) and earth and skin-friendly since we launched in 2014. We’re much more than clean beauty.”

Read on for more of Alexis Rose’s thoughts on the occasionally mystifying category, the importance of clinical-grade ingredients in the clean beauty world, and her favorite clean cosmetics.

How do you think “clean beauty” should actually be defined?

Clean beauty products should be formulated with ingredients that are of the earth, renewable, sustainable, biodegradable, and gentle on skin. Clean beauty is also about the packaging. We strive to minimize our footprint and ensure that the bottles and cartons we use are fully recyclable.

100% of the silicones trapped in our ecosystem are from wash-off personal care products.

Surprisingly few people are talking about the environmental impact of silicones and how most hair, makeup, and many skincare products are still formulated with them. It’s estimated that the annual production of cosmetic silicones has reached eight to ten million tons per year directly affecting the ocean’s rising temperatures. This poses a significant environmental concern. It’s rare that an environmental issue can be traced to one cause, but that is the case as 100% of the silicones trapped in our ecosystem are from wash-off personal care products. You’ll find them on cosmetics labeled as dimethicone, cyclopentasiloxane, polydimethylsiloxane, cyclomethicone, and the like. We never formulate with silicones.

What are the biggest misconceptions about clean beauty?

That clean products are not effective. We’ve disproven that myth with LILFOX. We formulate with clinical-grade actives and have the results to show for it. The quality of our formulations positions LILFOX at the cross-section between clinical grade/dermatologist products and the natural and organic brands known more for their sensorial experience than results. We create highly efficacious products that offer the most gorgeous aromatherapeutic experience.

Maybe “cleanical” should be the new “clean.” What lab-grown ingredients do you think are worth their salt?

We’re loving botanical stem cells, live ferments, and simulated natural defense components. From the sea to the desert to the sky, the earth is our muse and the lab is a place where we make magic happen.

How can the beauty industry improve to better define clean beauty?

First and foremost, there should be a globally recognized standard for clean beauty. “Clean beauty” needs a clear definition that speaks to traceable ingredients, sustainable packaging, ethical production, and earth-friendly processes. The beauty industry needs to define our long-term goals for the “clean” category and ensure that we meet them.

What other “clean” beauty products would you recommend?

I truly stand behind everything LILFOX. We’ve been meticulous from the beginning.

But I do find that some consumers are super conscious about the ingredients in their skincare but use conventional makeup that’s anything but clean. There was a time when clean color cosmetics didn’t perform as well as those formulated with lots of chemicals. Fortunately, that’s changed a lot in recent years. In terms of makeup, I love Kosas Tinted Face Oil, Kosas Cream Blushes, and the RMS Living Luminizer.

Summer 2023’s Biggest Home Décor Trends Include Coastal Grandma and Fluted Everything

The word “trend” can have a bad connotation. Particularly in world of home design, where an aesthetic decision is something you (quite literally) have to live with. But when you’re able to work a trend into your own carefully-crafted personal style, you can keep a space feeling fresh without bending to the will of Big Pinterest. That’s why we turn to the experts for their takes on trends and how to incorporate them in an elevated way. Currently on the docket: the biggest summer decor trends of 2023.

For expert guidance on the current trends to take note of, we tapped Nancy Evars, Angela Hamwey, Erin Hiemstra, Kristin Marino, Tess Twiehaus, Katie Winnington, and Daniella Villamil for their honest insight into the looks they’ve been spotting all season.

The Coastal Grandma Aesthetic

Building on the viral Coastal Grandma fashion trend, the cozy, eclectic look has extended to the design world.

“Taking a cue from a more traditional British décor, the hallmarks of granny design are things like lots of chintz prints, pattern on pattern, oversized florals, painted wood, and wallpaper everywhere,” shares designer Erin Hiemstra of Apartment 34. “Many designers, like Heidi Caillier, Rita Konig (of Domino fame), and Studio Ashby from the UK execute this look extremely well.”

Bring the Outdoors (Fabric) In

Designer Nancy Evars of Evars Collective has noticed more and more clients requesting fabrics traditionally used for outdoor furniture for indoor purposes.

“We’re seeing more indoor sofas, chairs, banquettes, and ottomans being upholstered in these durable textiles, as they hold up to kids, pets, and spills,” Evars notes. “ I also think it helps summer last a little longer by bringing that summer feel inside.”

But as Evars notes, these aren’t the stiff, rough textiles of the past. “Softer yarns and more vibrant colors make these translate so easily to both outdoor and indoor spaces,” she says. “CW Stockwell has new outdoor fabrics that have become the most requested textiles at Evars Collective showroom since launching in May.”

Scallops and Squiggles

“You can literally apply these quirky patterns anywhere,” says Tess Twiehaus of Tess Interiors. “This summer, I’m seeing them everywhere. Fireplaces, cabinetry, furniture… if you can dream it, you can add a funky little wave to it.”

Curves Everywhere

It’s not just scallops and squiggles. “We’re seeing curves, arches, and cylindrical details on anything from furniture, accents to millwork,” shares designer Katie Winnington of C&E Furniture. “I love the way it can soften a space and the movement it brings to a room.”

Butler’s Pantries Are Back

“I’m loving the rise in butler’s pantries and/or a separate ‘prep’ kitchen,” says Kristin Marino of KozyKasa. “These areas work great for storing your larger and less-used kitchen appliances and also allow the space for a separate fridge for bulk items. I often see a second dishwasher as well.”

Plaster and Faux Finishes

“Plaster and faux finishes are having a serious moment,” shares Winnington. “As someone who loves texture, this is one of my favorite trends.”

But there’s nothing homogeneous about the plaster of today, according to Twiehaus. “It’s one of those finishes that brings depth and texture without causing much of a distraction. I feel like we’re going to be seeing a lot more of it this summer, but not in your typical shades of ivory and greige,” the designer notes. “I think people are going to lean into the season as they’re designing and pull inspiration from their surroundings. We’ll be seeing lots of sunset hues and shades of blues.”

More Color

And speaking of greige, almost every designer we spoke to touched on how the current look is moving away from muted beiges and whites.

“Many clients are deterred from the light and bright interiors that once dominated the interior design world and are instead looking to add color and pattern to their homes,” explains Angela Hamwey of Mackenzie & Co. “While there’s not one specific color or pattern that we find clients are drawn to, we’re seeing them want to add contrast and interest through textiles or accessories, sometimes in an unusual or unexpected way. Colorful wooden beds or dining chairs seem to be making a comeback. In addition, we have been designing colored and patterned chair cushions for both dining chairs and accent chairs. We find this to be a fun way to add a bit of personality to the space without going overboard.”

Fluted Everything

“This new trend is everywhere, from walls to tile and furniture,” says Daniella Villamil of Daniella Villamil Interiors. “It’s a beautiful way of playing with organic shapes and textures and we welcome it!”

Pink Cabinets (Or Any Color but White)

Villamil has also noticed a particular color taking over for bright white kitchen cabinets: pink.

But if any form of pink is a bit too Barbiecore for you, it seems that any color in the kitchen is currently on trend.

“We’re happy to see the all-white and grey kitchens make their way out,” adds Hamwey. “With more people in favor of color, stark white is rapidly declining in popularity in order to create visual interest in the home. In general, we’re hoping to see grey replaced with warm neutral colors that create more of an inviting atmosphere. Grey and white tend to feel sterile, especially if they’re overused.”

One-of-a-Kind Design

Nostalgic design is having its moment. “We are finding that more often than not, our clients prefer [vintage accents] that can’t be found anywhere else,” explains Hamwey. “This includes everything from furnishings to art and accessories, but it also involves being re-inspired by past design trends and incorporating them in new fresh, sophisticated ways.”
